Assam: Bangladesh assistant high commissioner visits kokrajhar jail

Bangladesh assistant high commissioner, Kazi Muntashir Murshid today visited Kokrajhar jail and met the Bangladesh nationals languishing inside the jail for illegally entering Assam and awaiting for repatriation.

Kazi accompanied by senior officials of Kokrajhar district administration meet the Bangladeshi nationals jail inmates at Kokrajhar jail in presence of jail superintendent.

Later talking to the media, Murshid said he has been visiting various jails in Assam where Bangladeshi nationals are languishing and collecting their documents and forward them to Bangladesh for repatriation as per protocol

He said there are some Bangaldesh in Assam who had had illegally crossed the border and were imprisoned and had completed their jail terms for illegally entering Assam and were awaiting repatriation.. “Their term is over, but they are still lodged there. Since we don’t have a treaty with India for exchange of prisoners, we can repatriate them once the external affairs ministry replies to my letter with details of those similarly incarcerated in the state,” he said.

I have visit the jails, collect their documents and will forward them to Bangladesh for repatriation as per protocol, he added.

 The Bangladesh assistant high commissioner said four persons including three women in Kokrajhar jail have claimed to be from Bangladesh,  52 in Goalpara and 22 in Tezpur jail. He said they have already done the required paper work collected in Tezpur,
