Distribution of rapeseed-mustard under zero tillage has been going on in Hailakandi district of Assam.

Initiated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hailakandi and in collaboration with the district administration, rapeseed-mustard is being distributed to the farmers under the aspirational district programme so that they continue earning during the rabi season.

Under zero tillage, no tillage or minimum tillage is required for preparing the land for cultivation. Assistant Commissioner, Parikshit Phukan said during scanty rainfall cultivation of rapeseed-mustard under zero tillage yields better results in Assam and other parts of the North East region.

“Adopting this technology, farmers can save time and money by utilising fallow paddy land. Seeds sowing are done just after harvesting of paddy when the soil has sufficient moisture which helps in germination of seeds,” added Phukan.

Vegetable minikit under HMNEH and lentil seeds under NFSM schemes are also being distributed by the Agriculture department. Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli formally inaugurated the ceremonial distribution programme at Niskar-Lalpani under Katlicherra block in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem, District Agriculture Officer, Sudipta Debroy and ADO, Padom Bora.

The first demonstration took place at Niskar-Lalpani and will be conducted soon at Lala, Hailakandi and Algapur blocks.
