In an effort to promote sweet revolution, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has distributed bee-boxes among farmers and unemployed youths across South Assam’s Hailakandi district under its ‘Honey Mission’ initiative .
Altogether 26 beneficiaries were imparted training by master trainers following which bee-hive boxes and tool kit were distributed by Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli at a programme organised by KVIC in collaboration with Nature Learning Centre at Kukicherra forest range on Saturday. KVIC officers Bijay Kumar Singh and BC Das, ACF and Ranger were present on the occasion.
KVIC Executive (FBI) Bijay Kumar Singh said the commission has distributed 10 bee-boxes with iron stand, one bee veil, one bee smoker and hive tool to each beneficiary.
“The KVIC has also provided beekeepers practical training about examination of honeybee colonies, acquaintance with apicultural equipment, identification and management of bee enemies and diseases, honey extraction and wax purification, and management of bee colonies,” Singh said.
“It is also a low-investment and low-input business enterprise that directly generates economic gains for the participating members and integrates well with agriculture that forms the main economic activity for communities living in the rural areas,” Singh added.
Deputy Commissioner, Jalli said that bee-keeping would open many job avenues for the unemployed youths and aspiring young entrepreneurs in the district. She urged the youths to come forward and to avail the opportunity offered by KVIC under the mission.
Being the nodal agency of Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), KVIC provides loans for setting up units of processing, packaging and labelling units for the honey.

Amongst its various activities aimed at the development of khadi and other village industries in rural areas, the KVIC is implementing ‘Honey Mission’ for introducing and popularizing modern beekeeping in the rural areas.

Honey Mission was launched in August 2017 in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Sweet Revolution’ in 2016 while introducing Banas Honey project at Deesa in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district.
