Assam: Explosives recovered from Guwahati railway station, Grenade from Passenger

GRP recovered 4 bags of explosive items from Awadh Assam Express while grenade from a passenger in Bokakhat who was travelling to Guwahati by bus.

Three bags containing detonators and gelatine sticks were found abandoned on a platform at Guwahati Railway Station in the early hours of Monday.

The Guwahati Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered the three bags from platform No. 3 at around 5.45 a.m. while the Awadh Assam Express was still on the platform. Police found 440 pieces of gelatine sticks in 22 packets, 700 pieces of detonators in seven packets and three bundles of fuse wire.

Another bag of explosives was also recovered near the toilet of the AC 2-tier coach of the same Awadh Assam Express train by Jagiroad GRP-OP staff. Jagiroad is a town situated around 60 km east of Guwahati. The bag contained 160 pieces of gelatine sticks in eight packets and 500 pieces of detonators in five packets.

In a another joint operation carried by the Assam Police and Border Security Force (BSF) recovered grenades and explosives from a passenger in Bokakhat.

Acting on a tip-off, both the teams carried a search operation in a Guwahati bound bus to recover the objectionable materials from a passenger in Guwahati-bound bus. The man has been identified as Nirmal Tirki.

Assam police informed that they have recovered two grenades and a revolver from the apprehended and was travelling from Dimapur to Guwahati. Nirmal Tirki has been taken to the Bagori Police Station for further interrogation.

Meanwhile the Police are reportedly exploring the possibility of extremist plan for a major strike in Assam.
