Assam:  NFR sets record in drive against ticketless travelling

About 7.13 lakhs numbers of ticketless passengers were detected by NF Railway against previous year’s detection of 5.75 lakhs of such passenger, said in a press release issued by NF Railway .

This is about 24% (approx) higher in regard to number of cases detected in comparison to previous financial year. This increase is despite suspensions and cancellations of train services of Mail/Express & Passenger trains during the of August & September / 2017 due to breaches and floods over NF Railway leading to almost 4.47 million less travel of passenger.

NF Railway authority has also realized an amount of Rs. 46.17 crs from ticketless travelers as penalty during last financial year in comparison to Rs. 39.12 crs realized during previous year. This is about 18.04% (approx) higher in regard to earnings in comparison to last year. This is the highest ever penalty realization by N.F. Railway since formation of this Zone in 1959.

It is to be mentioned that during a special drive against the menace of ticketless travel on 29th May; 55 without ticket passengers were detected at Silchar railway station. The special drive was conducted by the N.F. Railway Vigilance Department jointly with Security and Commercial departments. During special checking an amount of Rs. 17,120.00 was realized as fine from the detected without ticket passenger. In addition to this an amount of Rs. 12,765.00 was also realized from passenger with un-booked luggage, spitting and littering in railway premises.

NF Railway officials have been conducting surprise ticket checking drive in Mail / Express and passenger Trains. As per section 137, of the Indian Railway Act of 1989, travelling without ticket, improper ticket or un-booked luggage in an offence punishable by imprisonment or fine or both.

To discourage ticketless travelling, Northeast Frontier Railway has put systems in place whereby surprise ticket checking drive is conducted by Flying Ticket Checking Squads of Divisions as well as HQ. Fortress checks are also conducted in stations. For this officers are nominated at HQ and Divisional levels from different department who are accompanied by security personal from Railway Protection Force and Govt. Railway Police.
