Assam: Over 13,000 pigs killed by African Swine Flu

"The infection has spread from six districts to three more, namely Majuli, Golaghat and Kamrup Metropolitan,"  said  a release issued by animal husbandry and veterinary department .

Guwahati- African Swine Flu has claimed the lives of around 13,000 pigs in Assam, disrupting the livelihood of hundreds of people involved in animal husbandry in the state.

The infection has spread rapidly as the deaths have been reported from nine districts in Assam, said,  Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister of Assam Atul Bora who visited the Kaziranga National Park to review the situation.

“The infection has spread from six districts to three more, namely Majuli, Golaghat and Kamrup Metropolitan,”  said  a release issued by animal husbandry and veterinary department .

Meanwhile the  authorities of Kaziranga National Park have dug a canal in Agoratoli range to deter wild boars from going to nearby villages, in order to save them from the disease. More details are awaited in this regard.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed officials of the veterinary and forest departments to work in coordination with the National Pig Research Centre (NPRC) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to save the animal from the disease.
