Assam: The great Bodo Leader Charan Narzary passes away

he was the man who led the ‘Udayachal’ movement for tribal people under PTCA, and then he also served as MLA and MP for many years.

Former MP, MLA, founder General Secretary of the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA) and one of the most prominent figures of Bodo nationalism, Charan Narzary passed away this morning, July 23. He was 87 at the time of his passing at Downtown Hospital.

Earlier, Narzary fell down at his Mwiderkhoro residence in Kokrajhar, following which he had to be hospitalised.

It is to be mentioned that in the early seventies, he was the man who led the ‘Udayachal’ movement for tribal people under PTCA, and then he also served as MLA and MP for many years.

In addition to that, he was a professor at Kokrajhar College before joining politics and also a noted writer and poet.

The role of Mr. Charan Narzary and the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA) in Bodo Politics For the Identity Assertion is the most significant and admirable.  The starring role of the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA) over the Bodo‟s distinctiveness identity issue was most important.

Late Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi declared Assam should be formed on federal basis according to the reorganisation of states. On the basis of that, the All Bodo Students‟ Union (ABSU) was formed in 16 February, 1967.

The active initiative of the ABSU, the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA) was formed on 27 February, 1967. The president and secretary of the PTCA was Biruram Dole and Charan Narzary respectively.

The PTCA played the role mainly for self-rule of the Bodo people. They demanded full autonomy in the region of Goalpara, Kamrup, Darrang, Lakhimpur and Sibasagar areas where the tribal people were residing mostly.
