Manipuri students and youth took to the streets of the capital in New Delhi on Wednesday to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The agitators barged into a VVIP security zone near the Parliament House in New Delhi and set effigies of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on fire.

Six people were injured during the protests as Delhi police used baton charge to disperse the mob of Manipuri protestors. The agitators were detained at the Mandir Marg Police Station.

It should be noted that many protests have been held on account of the bill in the capital in New Delhi and across all regions of the northeastern states.

The bill was passed by Lok Sabha on January 8, earlier this month and seeks to provide citizenship to migrants, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, who are of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian descent.

The Bill doesn’t have a provision for Muslim sects like Shias and Ahmediyas who also face persecution in Pakistan.

meanwhile massive protests have been going on across the Northeast against the Bill.
