Manipur: police seized brown sugar worth of Rs 100 crore

The police claimed that it was the biggest drug haul case in the history of Manipur.

Manipur police on Saturday busted a illegal drugs manufacturing factory at Lilong Dam in Manipur’s Thoubal district and 111.2 kg of brown sugar, worth over Rs 100 crore in the international market, was seized, police said Saturday.

Three persons, including a couple, have been arrested and several chemicals, equipment and tools used in manufacturing of brown sugar were also seized in the operation.

While parading the arrested persons along with the seized items at Narcotic and Affairs of Border  (NAB ) office in Imphal late Saturday afternoon, Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB) SP, W Basu said that the illegal factory was busted by a combined team of NAB and Thoubal district police.

The heroin manufacturing unit at Lilong Dam under Lilong police station of Thoubal district was busted early today morning at around 4 am, he said.

The combined team busted the brown sugar factory in a special operation conducted based on special information. Volunteers of ANJUMAN, a civil society organisation campaigning against drug abuse and trafficking in Lilong area, also assisted the combined team in the operation, he said.

SP identified the arrested persons as Md Matalip (40), his wife Samim Pusam (35) of Lilong Dam and Md Serajuddin Mohammad (29) son of Md Ibungo of Lilong Kaleikhong. He said that the factory was functioning from the house of Matalip.

Basu claimed that it was the first time in the history of Manipur that a law enforcing agency detected such a huge quantity of brown sugar while busting a drug manufacturing lab.

A case has been registered with NAB police station and the investigation has been initiated, the SP said while hinting involvement of more persons in the illegal drug manufacturing and trafficking.

NAB team also arrested three persons with 5.463 kg of opium during a raid at Hongkong Veng under Sugnu police station of Kakching police station on Friday, the SP informed.

He claimed that the seized opium would worth over Rs five lakh in the international market.

The arrested persons were identified as; Paosienlal Tungdim (32), son of late Mangsuanpok Tungdim of Gelngai village of Chandel district; Mangnu Tungdim (55), also from Gelngai village; and Aaron Nangsha (37), son of Kothou Nangsha from DC Lamkhai of Chandel district headquarters.

A case has also been registered and further investigation was going on, the SP added.
