Assam: Brick kilns start functioning maintaining social distancing in Hailakandi

The owners have been directed to provide food and shelter to the workers.

Hailakandi-  Following relaxations in industrial activities, brick kilns across the district have started functioning maintaining social distancing norms.

The district administration is keeping a close watch on the activities in brick kilns and has directed the owners to ensure social distancing and to provide masks and hand wash facilities to the migrant labourers during this time of pandemic.

Officials of the administration are making surprise visits to the brick kilns and has warned the owners that strict action would be taken against them for flouting rules of the lockdown. The brick kilns are allowed to operate with 50 per cent workforce and that, too, by observing social distancing norms.

The owners have been directed to provide food and shelter to the workers.

The district administration has reached out to the migrant labourers working in brick kilns and arranged ration and other essentials. Even steps have been taken by the municipal boards to include those without ration cards in the relief manual list.

Public transport was also arranged for labourers who wanted to go home to different parts of the state such as Dhubri, Barpeta and other districts.

To ensure well being and safety of the workers from the COVID-19 pandemic, the health authorities are screening the brick kiln workers. Health teams from Lala, Katlicherra and other places are examining the health status of the migrant labourers through proper screening.

The health teams deployed at inter-district borders with Cachar and Karimganj districts and inter-state border with Mizoram have been screening stranded persons coming from different parts of the state in the past several days.
