To remove the sense of alienation and bring the administration closer to the people, Hailakandi district administration in Assam embarked on a mass contact programme focusing on its inaccessible and far-flung areas.

Initiating the mass contact programme at the directive of the Chief Minister, Deputy Commission Adil Khan visited Gutguti, an interior and inaccessible area close to the Assam-Mizoram border,  of Reang community concentration on Sunday.

Gutguti under Katlicherra revenue circle in South Hailakandi is accessible after negotiating inhospitable and undulating terrain, rickety bamboo and log bridges.

The DC along with Superintendent of Police Mohneesh Mishra interacted with men and women of Reang community who expressed optimism that things will change for the better and they will enjoy the fruits of development with the visit of the top district officials to their remote area.

The outreach programme gave him an opportunity to directly witness a wide range of problems faced by the Reang community, he said.

The Reang community leaders told the DC the greatest problem being faced by the people is that of road communication and urged him to initiate steps for mitigating their woes. Health, education and drinking water are other problems plaguing the people. At the directive of the DC, District Development Commissioner, FR Laskar took note of the problems confronting the community.

The DC explained to the people that his purpose of coming to the backward village was to get first-hand account of the problems confronting them and find ways to redress their grievances.

The southern tip of Hailakandi district is plagued with problems of extremism and backwardness and Gutguti along with its adjoining villages fall under it.

As part of the outreach programme, DC Khan trudged along miles together to a remote village named Kundanala under Nunai forest village of Lala development block, with senior officials in tow on Wednesday. Khan interacted with the members of Reang and Tripura communities to get first-hand information of the problems facing them. Around 1,000 people of both the communities live here.

Following appraisal of the problems,  the DC assured them that steps would be taken to restore the defunct water supply scheme, besides installation of 50 solar street lights under CSR fund. Khan also assured the inhabitants that steps would be initiated to set up a health sub-centre. A one-day health camp was organised by the health authorities on Wednesday in which scores of people availed treatment free of cost.

The DC also visited Baruncherra, a remote village,  and addressed a meeting there in which he urged the people to avail the various welfare schemes extended by the state and central governments.

Lauding the efforts of the DC to connect with the people through the mass contact programme, the SP said it will go a long way in bridging the gap between the people and administration.

DDC Laskar believed that the mass contact programme has been able to take the administration to the midst of the people.
