Assam:  I-Day celebrations begin in Hailakandi Patriotic songs rent the air

The three-day Independence Day celebrations began in Hailakandi district with a district level patriotic songs competition organised by the Office of the Inspector of Schools at Town Hall in Hailakandi town here on Monday.

Altogether 53 students from 11 Secondary and MV schools participated in the event. The event was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Amalendu Roy in presence of Circle Officer Arpita Dutta, District Sports Officer, Jimli Borah, Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha, principals, teachers , students and leading citizens.

Speaking as chief guest, Amalendu Roy, while emphasizing the importance of sovereignty to the students, exhorted upon them to appreciate the sacrifices made by the great freedom fighters in freeing the country from imperialism. He also motivated the students to inculcate in them the democratic values as enshrined in our Constitution.

Earlier, in his welcome speech, Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha welcomed all the guests and explained the three-fold motto of the programme vis-a-vis to pay homage to the freedom fighters and martyrs of the nation, to enjoy the gift of sovereignty and to pass the rich legacy of the country to the next generation. He appealed to the students to be duty bound citizens of the country and contribute towards realisation of the dreams of the freedom fighters.

Later the participating students through their melodious and inspirational patriotic songs enthralled the audience. It was very difficult for the panel of judges to decide the winners. However, after much deliberations, the panel of judges decided to award Indra Kumari Girls’ HS School with the 1st prize followed by Netaji Subhas Academy with 2nd prize and Graham MV School with the 3rd prize.
