Assam: Panchayati Raj Diwas observed in Hailakandi district

The Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Diwas as a part of ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ observed  in 62 Gram Panchayats  of Hailakandi district of Assam on Tuesday.

The Hailakandi district administration organised today a series of functions in 62 Gram Panchayats under five development blocks of the district on the occasion of Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Diwas as a part of ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ from April 14 to May 5.

Chief Executive Officer, Hailakandi Zilla Parishad cum Project Director, DRDA, NK Shantee Kumar Singha said that prabhat pheris (morning walk) at all Gram Panchayats began early in the morning followed by rural sports and cultural programmes. Special gaon sabhas were organised where pledge was taken by the gram sabha members to work for the development of their villages.

Swacchta rally was also organised to create awareness on sanitation, health and hygiene. Members of the panchayats were honoured for exemplary works and for contributing significantly to the strengthening of the panchayati raj system.

 “Starting from the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, a special outreach programme is on to reach out the rural people to make them aware of the various social schemes. Awareness camps, seminars and meetings are being held to mark the occasion,” he said.

He further said people would be made aware of seven schemes including Ujala Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana-Saubhagya, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Jiwan Jyoti Bima Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna and Mission Indradhanush. He said eligible villagers are being enrolled by the teams at the spot.

Singha also said that besides Gram Shakti Abhiyan, Ayushman Bharat Diwas, Farmers’ Welfare Day and Aajeevika Diwas would be celebrated on April 28, 30 and May 2 and 5 respectively.

He said the objective of the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan is to promote social harmony among the villagers, connect to poor rural households, gain feedback on government’s programmes, focus on doubling farmers’ income, improving livelihood opportunities, and strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Singha said the Central government scheme aims at making rural local bodies self-sustainable, financially stable and more efficient.

He exhorted all the heads of various departments to ensure better coordination and cooperation to achieve the targets. He also said the status of activities is being reviewed on a routine basis.

Meanwhile, Joint Secretary to Government of India, Sameer Kumar Khare, who is also the Prabhari Officer of Hailakandi district, is arriving here on April 26 for supervising the ongoing Gram Swaraj Abhiyan in the district.
