Along with the rest of the country, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was observed in Hailakandi coinciding with the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Flagging of the Run for Unity at her office campus here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said the run is being organised to remember fondly the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was a symbol of unity. “The Run for Unity is a celebration for the unity of the country irrespective of region, language, caste, creed or religion and that we are Indians first,” she said.

Jalli said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was instrumental in bringing about unification of around 565 princely and feudal states with the mainstream. “The task of integrating around 565 princely and feudal states, which considered themselves to be independent from India, was an uphill task. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel singlehandedly brought about unification of the princely and feudal states by negotiating with them and convincing them to join the mainstream,” said Jalli.

She urged the young generation to imbibe the ideals of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and to work together to build a strong and united India.

Citing an instance of how Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as a lawyer overcame emotions despite getting the news of his wife’s death in the midst of a case and went on to win the case, Jalli said, “He was an iron man who was in control of every emotion and most importantly was in control of what has to be done for the vision of the country.”

Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner, officials and employees of Deputy Commissioner’s establishment and various departments took the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge on the occasion.
