Assam to get 3 more medical colleges- Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam will have three new medical colleges and their foundation stones will be laid next month, informed Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Three new medical colleges will come up in the State and their foundation stones will be laid next month.

The foundation stone of the Nalbari Medical College, to be built at a cost of Rs 398.31 crore, will be laid on January 7. The project is being partly funded under the NLCPR, while the rest of the cost would be borne by the State.

To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 382.70 crore, the foundation stone of Kokrajhar Medical College will be laid on January 6. The Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority will fund the Tinsukia Medical College whose foundation will be laid on January 9.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the construction of the three colleges will be completed in three years. Currently there are six medical colleges in the State having 726 MBBS seats and 495 PG seats.

Once the upcoming medical colleges at Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and Diphu are completed, the number of MBBS seats in the State would go up to 1126. These four colleges are expected to start functioning from the 2020-21 session and each would also have a bed capacity of 500.

The new medical colleges at Nalbari, Tinsukia and Kokrajhar would have MBBS seat capacity of 100 each. Each will also have a bed capacity of 500.
