Assam: Tragic collision between two ferries in Brahampura, one Capsizes, Over 50 missing

A massive rescue operation involving National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been launched.

JORHAT-  In a tragic collision between two ferries in Majuli, one has capsized in the Brahmaputra. The passenger ferry – Maa Kamala – was carrying around 120 passengers. The other was a cargo ferry. The incident took place near Nimatighat in Jorhat.  One inbound from Majuli, another going towards it. Hundred reportedly drowned. Search and rescue underway. Reportedly, over 50 passengers are still missing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “all possible efforts are being made to rescue the passengers.”
A woman who was rescued and sent to a hospital for treatment has died, government sources said late in the evening.
Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed deep concern over the ferry accident
The passenger ferry is owned by Inland Water Transport department,
  • 41 passengers rescued so far, among them 7 are children. 40 to 60 still missing, says Assam State Disaster Management Authority official.

  • Rescue divers reach the spot. NDRF commences rescue operation. All personal vehicles being transported by the ferry have capsized in the Brahmaputra.
  • CM Himanta Biswa Sarma directs Minister Bimal Bora to immediately travel to Majuli for taking stock of the situation. The CM to visit Majuli tomorrow.
