Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Resigns, Champai Soren to be the new CM

Soren was being questioned by Enforcement Directorate for more than six hours as part of an investigation into a "huge racket of illegal change of land ownership by the mafia" in Jharkhand.

RANCHI-  Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren submitted his resignation to the governor on Wednesday. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLAs have elected transport minister Champai Soren as their next leader.

“CM Hemant Soren has decided to resign. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader of the Legislative party. All the MLAs are with us,” Congress MLA Rajesh Thakur told the media.

Soren was being questioned by Enforcement Directorate for more than six hours as part of an investigation into a “huge racket of illegal change of land ownership by the mafia” in Jharkhand.

The ED team camped at his residence for nearly 13 hours and found Rs 36 lakh in cash and incriminating documents during its searches. The probe agency also seized a luxury SUV from Soren’s residence.

Hemant Soren also lodged an FIR against senior Enforcement Directorate officials at the SC/ST police station and alleged that the searches were conducted by the agency “harass and malign him and his entire community”.

Soren’s party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had slammed the ED for visiting his Delhi residence and had asked if the ED team had planted the cash found there.

The JMM alleged that the Jharkhand chief minister was being treated like a criminal and accused the Centre of indulging in “open hooliganism” with the help of central agencies.
