Union Home Minister Reviews National Flood Preparedness, Stresses Technological and Coordinated Approaches

NEW DELHI– Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, chaired a high-level meeting in the capital today to review India’s flood management preparedness ahead of the monsoon season.

He emphasized a “Zero Casualty Approach” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged maximum use of space technology by central agencies for flood control and water management.

Shah praised improvements in forecasting accuracy and duration, especially by the IMD and CWC, which now provide up to 7 days of advance flood warnings.

Highlighting urban flooding as a rising concern, Shah directed central agencies to prepare city-specific flood management plans and improve drainage designs in highways.

He also advised the Ministry of Jal Shakti to restore wetlands—especially in the Brahmaputra basin—and proposed afforestation in river basin areas to reduce soil erosion and counter declining rainfall.

Key concerns addressed included glacial lake monitoring, illegal river encroachments, and coordinated action among NDMA, NDRF, SDMAs, and DDMAs. A proposal was made to host a global expert conference on floods and space technologies, reflecting India’s rising capability in meteorology.

Union Ministers CR Patil and  Nityanand Rai, along with senior officials from multiple ministries and agencies—including NDMA, IMD, NRSC, CWC, and NHAI—were present during the meeting.
