5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Morigaon district at 4:17 am, triggering tremors felt across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan and China.

GUWAHATI-  A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Morigaon district early Monday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at approximately 4:17 am local time (IST) with its epicentre located near Morigaon, at a depth of about 50 kilometres, the NCS said in an official bulletin.

Residents in central Assam reported mild to moderate tremors, with many waking up to shaking that prompted them to rush outdoors. There were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or structural damage as of the latest updates from officials and disaster response authorities.

While the most pronounced shaking was felt within Assam, the earthquake was reported to have been perceptible across a wide swath of South Asia. The tremors were felt in neighbouring states and regions of India, including parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal.

Reports also indicated that residents in Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma), Bhutan, and areas of China experienced light shaking, reflecting the quake’s reach across tectonically active zones.

Seismologists note that northeastern India lies in Seismic Zone V, India’s most earthquake-prone classification, due to complex tectonic interactions along the Himalayan and Indo-Burma plate boundaries. Earthquakes of moderate strength are relatively common in the region, and authorities have reiterated standard safety advice to residents — including moving to open areas away from buildings and unsecured structures during strong tremors.

Local disaster management teams continue to monitor the situation, and the NCS has urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks, which can follow significant seismic activity. Government agencies have mobilised precautionary surveillance in affected districts, though no emergency declaration has been issued.
