KOKRAJHAR- In a significant political shift, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has emerged victorious in the 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, securing 23 out of the 40 seats. This victory marks a decisive comeback for the party, which had been ousted in 2020.

The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trail with 8 and 9 seats, respectively, according to the latest trends from the counting centers across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The elections, held on September 22, witnessed a robust voter turnout of 77.75%, with over 26.6 lakh voters casting their ballots across five districts—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur. The high participation underscores the electorate’s engagement in shaping the region’s governance.

BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary, contesting from Debargaon and Chirangduar, maintained a commanding lead in both constituencies. His performance reflects the party’s strengthened position and the electorate’s renewed confidence in its leadership.

Congress, which had fielded candidates across all 40 seats, failed to secure any leads, mirroring its performance in the 2020 elections. This outcome raises questions about the party’s influence in the region.

The BPF’s resurgence is attributed to its focus on local issues such as infrastructure development, employment opportunities, and ethnic harmony. The party’s emphasis on these concerns resonated with voters, particularly in the tribal-reserved constituencies, which constitute 30 of the 40 seats.

With a majority requiring 21 seats, the BPF is poised to form the executive independently, potentially reshaping the priorities of the BTC. The party’s return to power could influence the political dynamics in Assam, especially in the lead-up to the 2026 state assembly elections.

As the final results are declared, political analysts will closely monitor the implications of the BPF’s victory on future alliances and governance strategies in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
