Assam: Sibsagar Man beaten to death on suspicion of cow theft, 14 arrested

Locals protested the arrest of 14 persons saying they are innocent.

GUWAHATI-  A man was beaten to death on suspicion of cow theft in Sibsagar district of Assam. Giving this information on Tuesday, officials said that 14 people have been arrested so far in the case.

Sibsagar Superintendent of Police Shubhrajyoti Bora said the incident took place on Sunday night in the Bamunpukhuri tea garden area.

A group of people had thrashed a man named Naji Ali on suspicion of cow theft. After this he was taken to the police station. He was shifted to a local hospital and later to Jayasagar Civil Hospital.

However, he succumbed to serious injuries during treatment.

“As per the preliminary investigation, we have arrested 14 people for their alleged involvement in the case,” Bora said. Further investigation is on.

Meanwhile, the locals have alleged that Naji Ali was earlier accused of cow theft and was arrested more than once. Locals  protested the arrest of 14 persons saying they are innocent.
