Assam: Unwed Mother Allegedly Sells Newborn for Rs 50,000 in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR-   In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through Assam’s Sivasagar district, a 22-year-old  unwed mother allegedly sold her newborn baby for Rs 50,000 at Sivasagar Civil Hospital. The case, which came to light on July 10, 2025, has led to the arrest of three individuals, including the mother, as authorities investigate a this type of crime network in the region.

According to official sources, the young woman, who recently gave birth at the hospital, was reportedly planning to sell her infant shortly after delivery. The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) were alerted on June 23 about the mother’s intentions.

Officials visited the hospital, counseling the woman and her family against such actions and warning them of severe legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines. Despite these warnings, the infant was sold in a covert deal before the mother was discharged from the hospital. However the hospital authorities has claimed that the incident may took place in out side the hospital campus.

A DCPU official stated, “We instructed the family to hand over the child to us after discharge, but they proceeded with the sale. On learning the infant had been sold for Rs 50,000, we lodged an FIR with the Sivasagar police, prompting immediate action.”

The police have detained the mother, her aunt, and an ASHA worker in connection with the case, and efforts are underway to locate the buyer and rescue the newborn.

The  authorities suspect the involvement of intermediaries and are intensifying their investigation to uncover any larger networks operating in the area.

The Sivasagar police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice and the safe recovery of the infant.

Meanwhile, the case has sparked outrage among local residents, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such heinous acts.

The CWC and DCPU are also working to provide support to vulnerable families to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, this heartbreaking case raises critical questions about social and economic vulnerabilities that may drive such desperate actions, underscoring the need for greater awareness and systemic interventions to protect children in the region.
