Mizoram: Assam Rifles Seize Drugs Worth Over Rs 46 Crore in Major Anti-Narcotics Operations

The raid resulted in the recovery of 1.041 kg of Heroin No. 4 and 9.381 kg of methamphetamine tablets, with an estimated market value of ₹40.05 crore.

AIZAWL– In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with local authorities, seized methamphetamine tablets and heroin valued at over ₹46 crore in two high-impact anti-narcotics operations in Mizoram within a 72-hour period.

The operations, conducted in the border town of Zokhawthar and the Tuikhuahtlang area of Aizawl, underscore the force’s relentless efforts to curb the growing drug menace in the region, which shares a porous 510-km border with Myanmar.

On July 26, acting on specific intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel launched a late-night search operation in the Melbuk area of Zokhawthar, Champhai district, near the Indo-Myanmar border.

The raid resulted in the recovery of 1.041 kg of Heroin No. 4 and 9.381 kg of methamphetamine tablets, with an estimated market value of ₹40.05 crore. The contraband, suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar’s Chin State—a known hub for narcotics production—was found in an abandoned location.

The seized drugs were handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for further investigation and legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Two days earlier, on July 24, a joint operation involving Assam Rifles, Aizawl Police, and the Excise and Narcotics Department targeted a vehicle in Tuikhuahtlang, Aizawl. Based on precise intelligence, the team set up a vehicle checkpoint and intercepted a vehicle carrying 1.97 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth ₹6.6 crore.

Three individuals were apprehended during the operation and handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Aizawl for further legal proceedings.

These operations highlight the strategic importance of Mizoram as a transit route for drug smuggling, with its unfenced borders in districts like Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip being exploited by traffickers.

The Assam Rifles’ proactive measures, including intelligence-driven raids and community outreach, aim to disrupt these networks. The force has also been conducting awareness campaigns across Mizoram, educating locals, particularly the youth, about the dangers of drug abuse and the legal consequences of trafficking.

Posts on social media reflected public appreciation for the Assam Rifles’ efforts, with users praising the force for delivering a “major blow to drug trafficking” in the region. One post noted the seizure of “9.381 kg meth tablets & 1.041 kg heroin worth ₹40.05 crore” in Zokhawthar, emphasizing the scale of the operation.

The recent seizures add to Assam Rifles’ ongoing campaign against narcotics, with the force having confiscated drugs worth over ₹4,200 crore in the past four years. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant to dismantle the cross-border drug trade threatening the Northeast.
