Nagaland: Massive Landslide Disrupts Kohima-Mao Road, Strands Commuters on NH-02

The incident, reported on July 2, 2025, has crippled the vital road link between Nagaland and Manipur.

KOHIMA– A massive landslide struck the Kohima-Mao stretch of National Highway-2 (NH-2) at Phesama, Nagaland, today, severely disrupting traffic and stranding numerous vehicles, including trucks carrying essential goods to Manipur.

The incident, reported on July 2, 2025, has crippled the vital road link between Nagaland and Manipur, causing significant logistical challenges for commuters and emergency services.

The landslide occurred on a 28 km stretch between Mao–Kidima–Chakhabama, with the most severe damage at Phesama. Incessant rainfall in the region is believed to have triggered the slide, compounding issues on a highway already under strain from ongoing maintenance by the Manipur Public Works Department (PWD) on a 9 km section, which remains open for traffic.

The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has mobilized resources to restore the damaged section, but officials indicate that the scale of the landslide may delay repairs.

The Nagaland government has provided land to facilitate restoration efforts. To manage the crisis, traffic diversions have been implemented. Light vehicles are being rerouted via the 193 km Dimapur–Kohima–Phesama–Kisama–Jakhama–Mao–Maram–Imphal route.

Heavy vehicles, however, face restrictions, with authorities directing them to halt at key points like Khuzama and Sechu Zubza.

The disruption has raised concerns about the supply of essential goods to Manipur, with local traders and residents expressing frustration over the recurring issue on this critical highway.

This incident follows a similar landslide near Kisama on June 1, 2025, where a 50-meter stretch of NH-2 collapsed due to heavy rainfall and possible post-earthquake tremors.

That event also prompted temporary diversions and restrictions, highlighting the vulnerability of this highway to natural calamities.

Authorities are urging commuters to follow traffic advisories and exercise caution while restoration efforts continue.
