GUWAHATI — The high-profile legal proceedings in the death case of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg continued in the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court today, January 3, 2026. The hearing, which drew significant public and media attention across Assam, concluded with key developments on bail applications and the next court schedule.

Bail Pleas Filed by Multiple Accused

During the hearing, four accused persons filed bail applications before the court.

  • Amritprava Mahanta, a band member who has been charged in connection with the case, moved a bail petition.
  • Sandipan Garg, Zubeen’s cousin and a former Assam Police officer, also applied for bail.
  • Two personal security officers (PSOs) — Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya — submitted their own bail pleas through lawyers.

Zubeen Garg — a cultural icon in Assam known for his prolific career as a singer, composer and actor — died under controversial circumstances on September 19, 2025, while on a trip to Singapore to perform at a festival. He reportedly lost his life after a swimming incident, but subsequent investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam CID led to arrests and charges against several people in his circle.

Separately, Zubeen Garg’s family today announced the formation of a trust in his memory aimed at preserving his artistic legacy and ideals. The trust is expected to work with cultural organisations, underscoring the enduring impact of Garg’s contributions to music and arts in Assam and beyond.
