Zubeen Garg, aged 52, died on September 19, 2025, under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea near St. John's Island in Singapore.

GUWAHATI – In a significant breakthrough in the high-profile investigation into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) today submitted a voluminous 3,500-page chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati.

Zubeen Garg, aged 52, died on September 19, 2025, under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea near St. John’s Island in Singapore. He was in the city as a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival (NEIF).

Singapore authorities initially ruled the death as drowning with no evidence of foul play, but the Assam government formed a nine-member SIT under Special DGP M P Gupta following widespread public outcry and over 60 FIRs demanding a thorough probe.

The chargesheet, filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), names seven individuals who have been arrested since early October.

Four accused charged with murder (Section 103 of BNS)-  Shyamkanu Mahanta (NEIF organiser), Siddhartha Sharma (Garg’s manager/secretary), Shekhar Jyoti Goswami (band member), and Amritprava Mahanta (singer and band member).

Garg’s cousin, suspended Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg, charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Two personal security officers (PSOs), Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, charged with criminal breach of trust.

The SIT examined statements from over 300 witnesses, including Singapore-based Assamese expats, and incorporated forensic evidence such as two post-mortem reports (one from Singapore and one from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital), toxicology reports, and viscera analysis from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). Seized items include Garg’s mobile phone, medicines, and a suitcase.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly described the death as “plain and simple murder,” stating that the motive would “shock the state” and that one person directly killed Garg while others assisted.

He expressed confidence that justice would be delivered through the judicial process. The case has sparked intense emotions across Assam, with fans gathering outside the court today and the ongoing “Justice for Zubeen” campaign gaining momentum.

The chargesheet now moves to the Sessions Court for trial, marking the end of the investigation phase and the beginning of legal proceedings.

Singapore Police continue their parallel probe, which has not yet indicated foul play, though it may extend further. The Assam SIT’s submission is seen as a major step toward resolving the controversy surrounding the beloved singer’s untimely demise.
