SILCHAR- A massive python was spotted near Girls Hostel Number 1 of Assam University, Silchar campus on the night of December 18. The sighting around 10.30 pm sparked panic among onlookers.
The nearly 17-foot-long, 100-kg Burmese python, believed to be the largest ever discovered in a human habitat in Silchar’s Barak Valley, was rescued by the forest department with assistance from students. The snake was safely released into its natural habitat.
The snake was first spotted near the girls’ hostel number 1 at around 10:30 p.m. on December 18. It later moved toward the campus gymnasium, where the rescue operation took place.

“Burmese pythons are common in our area and often found inside the campus. They primarily hunt goats and other small animals,” Bishal explained to a local news outlet.

Chakraborty, who headed the mission, told the media, “I have seen even bigger snakes in the wild, but, this is probably the biggest Burmese Python in the history of the Barak Valley rescued amid human habitat.”
He added, “I have been rescuing snakes for the past seven years, and when I received a call from Assam University last night, I wasted no time in responding to its rescue. I would not have been able to catch it without the assistance of the university’s students, who were quite supportive. Later, we released it in a specific inner line woodland area.”
A video of the rescuers and students rescuing the giant python has gone viral on social media.
