Assam: BJP Accuses Congress of “Destroying Democracy” After Alleged Attack on Assam Deputy Speaker
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika also criticized the incident, calling it a direct insult to the Assembly and the Constitution.
GUWAHATI- Political tensions flared in the Assam Legislative Assembly after BJP MLA Bhabesh Kalita accused Congress of attempting to “destroy democracy” following an alleged physical attack on Deputy Speaker Numal Momin by Congress MLA Nurul Huda during question hour.
Condemning the incident, Kalita stated, “In today’s Assembly session, during question hour, our Deputy Speaker Numal Momin was attacked by Congress MLA Nurul Huda. This is not sending out a good message regarding democracy. Congress doesn’t follow any rules. They destroyed the country, and they are trying to destroy democracy as well.”

Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika also criticized the incident, calling it a direct insult to the Assembly and the Constitution. “Congress MLA Nurul Huda physically assaulting the Hon’ble Deputy Speaker, Dr. @DrNumal, is not only a condemnable act; it is also a direct insult to the Assembly and the Constitution,” Hazarika posted on social media platform X.
He further added, “The Assam Legislative Assembly is a sacred place of democracy, where such unconstitutional behavior is completely unacceptable. Such actions go against the true values of Assam and Bharat. Shame!”

The clash follows protests by opposition legislators from the Congress and AIUDF against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who was accused of attempting to attack opposition members and using abusive language during a heated debate on March 21. Opposition members have also criticized the Speaker of the Assembly, demanding action against Kurmi.
With both sides trading barbs, the political atmosphere in the Assam Legislative Assembly remains charged. Further responses from political leaders are awaited.
