Assam: Car Falls into River at Majuli Ferry Ghat
A car slipped into the Subansiri River while being loaded onto a ferry at the Selek–Dhunaguri ghat on the Majuli–Lakhimpur route, triggering panic among passengers.

LAKHIMPUR- A car fell into the Subansiri River on Sunday, January 18, while it was being loaded onto a ferry at the Selek–Dhunaguri ghat on the Majuli–Lakhimpur route, causing panic among passengers, ferry staff and onlookers at the riverbank.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred during routine loading operations when the vehicle reportedly lost balance and slipped off the ferry ramp before it could be secured. Visuals from the site showed the car submerging into the river as people at the ghat raised alarms.

Passengers waiting to board the ferry rushed away from the loading area, while ferry workers attempted to assess the situation. No injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident, as the vehicle was unoccupied at the time it fell into the river, officials said.
Local authorities and ferry management reached the spot shortly after the incident. Efforts were initiated to retrieve the vehicle from the river, while ferry operations were temporarily affected.

The Majuli–Lakhimpur ferry route is a critical transport link for residents of the river island and adjoining areas. The incident has raised concerns over safety protocols during ferry loading, particularly during peak movement hours.
