Assam Govt Appoints 5-Member Team for Zubeen Case

The Assam Cabinet approved a five-member special public prosecutor team to handle the ongoing legal proceedings in the death case of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

GUWAHATI — The Assam government on Friday approved the constitution of a five-member team of special public prosecutors to represent the state’s interests in the ongoing death case of noted singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg, officials said.

Announcing the decision after a state cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the move would strengthen the prosecution’s position in what has become a high-profile legal battle. Senior advocate Ziaul Kamar of the Gauhati High Court will serve as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP).

He will be supported by Brojendra Mohan Choudhury as additional SPP, and Kishore Dutta, Pranjal Dutta and Bikash Jamar as assistant public prosecutors.

The appointment follows an appeal from Garg’s family for a robust legal team capable of effectively countering the defence assembled by the accused. The singer’s wife Garima Garg had publicly urged the government to ensure an “equally strong” prosecution.

The cabinet also approved a one-time grant of ₹5 crore for the Zubeen Garg Trust, an initiative by the singer’s family to preserve and promote his artistic legacy, including plans for a museum and cultural activities in his name. Sarma said the government welcomed the trust’s formation and pledged continued support.

Garg, 52, died on September 19, 2025, in Singapore during a visit for the North East India Festival. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been probing the circumstances of his death, and a chargesheet was filed in December 2025.

It named several individuals, including festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, and his cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg, with offences ranging from murder to culpable homicide and criminal breach of trust.

The Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for January 17, as legal proceedings continue.
