Assam: Judicial Panel to Probe Zubeen Garg’s Mysterious Death, Announces Assam CM
The commission, to be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, will be formally constituted on October 4, 2025.

GUWAHATI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the constitution of a judicial commission to probe the mysterious death of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore.
The commission, to be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, will be formally constituted on October 4, 2025. It will oversee the CID investigation into Garg’s death and ensure transparency in uncovering the truth.
The Singapore autopsy report concluded drowning as the cause of death, with findings shared with Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg. However, a second autopsy at Gauhati Medical College is awaited for further clarity.

The move comes amid widespread public outcry, speculation, and allegations of foul play, ranging from poisoning and negligence to conspiracy.
Earlier, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed, leading to the arrests of Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.

The CID has taken custody of the accused for interrogation, while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) may soon join the probe to investigate financial irregularities.
Appealing to the public, CM Sarma said, “We are committed to uncovering the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s untimely death. I urge all those with any relevant information, videos, or social media posts to depose before the judicial commission.”
Zubeen Garg, who rose to national fame with songs like “Ya Ali” and remained a cultural icon in Assam, left an irreplaceable void in the state’s artistic and musical identity. The judicial probe is expected to provide answers to the unresolved questions surrounding his tragic demise.
