Assam: Man beaten to death by mob in Sivasagar over alleged mobile phone theft

SIVASAGAR- A 27-year-old man named Palu Gowala was allegedly beaten to death by a group of locals in Assam’s Sivasagar district after being accused of stealing a mobile phone from a neighbuor’s house early Monday morning, according to the police .
The violent incident, which occurred around 5am in Phukan Nagar locality, also left Gowala’s friend, Dadu Orang, critically injured and he is currently hospitalised.

Police officials revealed that Gowala and Orang were attacked on the streets by the mob, who left them severely injured until a patrolling police team intervened. Both victims were subsequently taken to a local government hospital, where Gowala was declared dead by doctors. Orang, who survived the attack, is now receiving medical treatment.
Moidul Islam, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) in Sivasagar, stated that Gowala’s family has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the group of locals involved. He assured that a case of murder is being registered and that the accused will be identified and apprehended shortly.

Orang later spoke to the media, asserting that they were unaware of any theft. “We were just walking on the street when they stopped us and accused us of theft. Despite our denials, they began to thrash us,” he said.
The police are investigating both the alleged theft and the subsequent violence. ASP Islam said that regardless of the theft accusation, the violent response by the mob is unacceptable and will be thoroughly investigated.
