Assam to Name Roads After Bhupen Hazarika
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces that every town and district in Assam will soon have a road named after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika as part of a new cultural initiative.

GUWAHATI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a sweeping cultural initiative to name a road after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in every town and district of the state. The announcement was made during state-wide commemorations marking the 14th death anniversary of the legendary singer, filmmaker, and activist.
Addressing a massive gathering in Guwahati, Sarma said, “Dr. Hazarika’s voice bridged communities; we want his name to connect every corner of Assam.” The plan includes beautification drives, murals, benches, and audio installations playing iconic songs such as “Bistirno Parore.”

The government has set December 10 for the formal inauguration of the first set of “Bhupen Hazarika Roads,” alongside the unveiling of a new martyrs’ memorial. Cultural Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika described the initiative as a “living archive,” estimating a project cost of ₹50 crore funded through state allocations and CSR partnerships.
The tribute follows a day-long series of choral performances across Assam’s 126 constituencies, where thousands sang “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.” The state government has also initiated diplomatic efforts to have the song recognised by the United Nations as a global anthem of humanity.

Critics, however, have questioned the financial prudence of the initiative, urging the government to prioritise infrastructure maintenance. Opposition MLA Rakibul Hussain remarked, “Naming roads is meaningful, but basic repairs are essential too.”
For many artists and citizens, the tribute is long overdue. Musician Joi Barua described the initiative as “a poetic continuation of Hazarika’s journeys.”
The government plans further cultural programmes, including the construction of a 100-foot statue in Guwahati and expanded annual festivals. Officials said the road-naming project aims to reinforce Hazarika’s legacy for future generations.
