Assam: Violence Erupts in West Karbi Anglong Over Land Eviction Demands

Demonstrators set fire to the residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.

DIPHU- Protests in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district turned violent on Monday, resulting in injuries to several protesters and security personnel after demonstrators set fire to the residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.

The unrest stemmed from ongoing demonstrations demanding the eviction of alleged illegal settlers from Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) lands, which indigenous groups claim are protected for community use.

Tensions escalated early in the day following reports that authorities had removed hunger strikers from a protest site in the Phelangpi area around 3 a.m. This prompted a large-scale road blockade at Kheroni Bridge (also known as Thong Nokbe), where thousands gathered peacefully initially, rejecting talks with district officials and insisting on direct dialogue with KAAC leadership.

However, the situation deteriorated in the Donkamukam area as protesters marched toward Ronghang’s residence. Reports indicate that after police detained some demonstrators, crowds resorted to stone-pelting and arson, torching the KAAC CEM’s ancestral home.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel responded by opening fire to disperse the mob, injuring at least three protesters. One CRPF jawan was also reported injured during clashes.

Heavy security forces have been deployed in Donkamukam, Kheroni, and surrounding areas to maintain order, with the situation described as tense but under control by evening.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu was dispatched to the district on orders from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to oversee restoration of normalcy and engage with stakeholders.

Local indigenous organizations have been vocal about protecting tribal lands from encroachment, a recurring issue in the hill districts. Authorities have urged calm while promising to address grievances through dialogue.

No fatalities have been reported so far in Monday’s incidents. Investigations are underway, and additional forces remain on standby to prevent further escalation.
