Authorities Warn of Avalanche Risk in Sikkim

Sikkim issues avalanche alert amid heavy snowfall and rain; Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake routes closed, tourism disrupted in East Sikkim.

GANGTOK — Authorities in Sikkim have issued an urgent weather advisory following a surge in heavy snowfall and torrential rain across the state’s higher reaches.

As of Saturday evening, an avalanche alert remains active for high-altitude zones exceeding 3,500 metres in the Gangtok and Pakyong districts. Disaster management teams have warned residents and travellers to avoid steep slopes and vulnerable ridges as the risk of snow slides remains high.

The sudden turn in weather has brought tourism in East Sikkim to a temporary standstill. Key routes leading to the popular Tsomgo Lake and the Nathula Pass have been officially closed until further notice.

Dozens of tourist vehicles were reportedly turned back from checkposts today as road conditions became treacherous due to a thick layer of fresh snow and poor visibility.

“Safety is our immediate priority,” a senior official from the Roads and Bridges Department stated. “Snow clearing operations will begin as soon as the weather stabilises, but for now, the terrain is too unstable for transit.”

While the capital, Gangtok, continues to experience intermittent heavy showers, the state government has advised tourists to monitor local weather apps and coordinate with their travel agents before planning any North or East Sikkim excursions.
