BJP Secures Landslide Victory in Mizoram’s Chakma Autonomous District Council Elections

The MNF and ZPM followed with 8 and 12 councils respectively. The Congress party, however, managed to secure only 2 seats across all councils.

AIZAWL/ NEW DELHI –  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the village council elections of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram.

The elections, held on Wednesday, resulted in the BJP winning 64 out of 88 village councils, marking a significant political shift in the region. Out of a total of 516 seats, the party clinched 366, comprising 304 general and 62 reserved seats.

The Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) followed with 8 and 12 councils respectively. The Congress party, however, managed to secure only 2 seats across all councils.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday expressed his gratitude to the people of Mizoram for delivering a “resounding mandate” to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the village council elections of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC). He attributed the victory to the public’s trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his commitment to Mizoram’s development.

In a post on social media platform X, Shah thanked the voters and congratulated the Mizoram BJP workers. “It is the people’s affection for PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, who has always bolstered the development of Mizoram. Heartiest congratulations to the Karyakartas of the Mizoram BJP,” he wrote.

The Chakma Autonomous District Council, established under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, is responsible for governing the Chakma tribal areas in Mizoram. The council consists of 24 Members of the District Council (MDC), including 20 elected and four nominated members, overseeing crucial sectors such as agriculture, education, and public health.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma met Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday. The home minister is scheduled to visit Mizoram on March 15 as part of a three-day trip to the northeast.

During his visit, Shah will attend a function marking the relocation of Assam Rifles establishments from Aizawl to Zokhawsang, about 15 km from the state capital. The Mizoram government and Assam Rifles had signed a formal agreement on October 23 last year for the relocation. Shah is also expected to meet BJP party workers during his visit.
