Gunfight erupts between armed groups in Kangpokpi

A morning gunfight between rival armed factions in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district sparked tension in surrounding villages, prompting deployment of additional security forces as authorities assess the incident.

IMPHAL-  A gunfight broke out on Thursday morning between two armed groups in Kangpokpi district of Manipur, creating alarm among villagers and prompting security forces to reinforce peripheral areas, officials said.

According to preliminary police sources, suspected cadres of the banned Zeliangrong United Front (S Kamson) were engaged in an armed confrontation with armed Kuki underground groups near Kharam Vaiphei village at around 7:40 a.m. The clash reportedly occurred during a ZUF operation aimed at destroying alleged illicit poppy cultivation and underground camps in the area.

State authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties from the firing, and the exchange of gunfire stopped after some time. Additional security forces have been rushed to the surrounding villages to prevent escalation and ensure public safety.

The sound of gunfire — heard in areas close to Imphal West district, which borders Kangpokpi — sparked tension and panic among residents, reviving memories of earlier clashes between armed groups in Manipur’s hill regions that have periodically disrupted peace.

Officials noted that the Zeliangrong United Front has in recent months claimed operations against alleged illegal poppy cultivation and unauthorized underground camps of Kuki Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups.

The broader context of insurgent competition over territory and cultivation areas has fed into periodic violence in the hills, despite ongoing efforts by security forces to contain armed conflict.

Security personnel are continuing their assessment of the situation, and local administration has urged residents to remain calm while investigations into the specific triggers and affiliations of the combatants continue.
