Indian-Origin Man Arrested for Mid-Air Bomb Threat on EasyJet Flight in UK

The incident, which unfolded mid-air, prompted an emergency landing and sparked widespread attention due to viral videos circulating on social media.

A 41-year-old man of Indian origin, identified as Abhay Devdas Nayak, was arrested on Sunday, July 27, after allegedly making a bomb threat and causing panic aboard an EasyJet flight from London Luton to Glasgow.

The incident, which unfolded mid-air, prompted an emergency landing and sparked widespread attention due to viral videos circulating on social media.

According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, Nayak emerged from the aircraft restroom approximately one hour into EasyJet Flight EZY609, shouting “Allahu Akbar” and claiming he had a bomb. He was also heard yelling inflammatory slogans, including “Death to America” and “Death to Trump,” while raising his hands in the air.

The disruption caused immediate alarm among passengers, with some fearing for their safety. Videos captured by fellow travelers show Nayak being restrained by passengers, who tackled him to the floor of the aircraft aisle as flight attendants searched his belongings.

The pilot declared a mid-air emergency and initiated a rapid descent, landing the plane safely at Glasgow Airport around 8:20 AM local time. Upon arrival, the aircraft was directed to a remote stand, where police officers promptly arrested Nayak.

Authorities confirmed that no explosives or weapons were found on board, and the incident is being treated as a hoax rather than a genuine security threat.

Nayak, a resident of Luton, Bedfordshire, appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday, July 28, charged with assault and endangering the safety of an aircraft under the UK’s Air Navigation Order. He did not enter a plea during the hearing and was remanded in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for the following week.

Despite the nature of his chants, counter-terrorism police assessed the incident and determined that no terrorism-related charges were warranted.

A report by the New York Post claimed Nayak possessed documents indicating he was an Indian national with refugee status, though UK authorities have not publicly confirmed these details.

The incident coincided with a visit by US President Donald Trump to his Turnberry golf course in Scotland, approximately an hour’s flight from Glasgow.

Nayak’s alleged statements targeting Trump and America have raised questions about his motives, which remain unclear. Some reports and social media discussions have noted the incongruity of Nayak’s Hindu-origin name—meaning “fearless,” “servant of the gods,” and “chief”—with his use of Islamic phrases, leading to speculation that he may have been attempting to impersonate a Muslim to incite fear. Authorities have not commented on this aspect of the case.

EasyJet issued a statement confirming the passenger’s removal due to his disruptive behavior and emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remained their priority. The airline thanked passengers for their cooperation and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the unscheduled landing.

The incident has drawn significant attention online, with viral videos amplifying public discourse. While some have condemned Nayak’s actions as reckless and dangerous, others have debated the broader implications of his behavior, including the use of religious slogans in a non-terrorism-related context.

The case continues to unfold as investigators seek to understand the circumstances that led to the mid-air scare. Nayak’s next court appearance is expected to provide further clarity on the charges and potential motives behind the disruption that gripped passengers on the London-Glasgow flight
