Lt. Shashank Tiwari Sacrifices Life to Save Fellow Soldier in Sikkim
Lt. Tiwari, 23, hailed from Ayodhya and was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 2024.

GANGTOK — In a poignant display of valor and selflessness, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the Indian Army’s Sikkim Scouts regiment laid down his life while rescuing a fellow soldier during an operational patrol in North Sikkim.
The incident occurred on May 22, 2025, when Lt. Tiwari was leading a Route Opening Patrol towards a Tactical Operating Base. During the mission, Agniveer Stephan Subba slipped while crossing a log bridge and was swept away by a fast-moving mountain stream.
Without hesitation, Lt. Tiwari jumped into the treacherous waters to save his comrade. With assistance from Naik Pukar Katel, they successfully rescued Agniveer Subba. However, Lt. Tiwari was carried away by the strong current, and despite immediate rescue efforts, his body was recovered 800 meters downstream approximately 30 minutes later.

Lt. Tiwari, 23, hailed from Ayodhya and was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 2024. He was the only son of his parents, with his father, Jang Bahadur Tiwari, serving in the Merchant Navy and currently stationed in the USA. His mother, Neeta Tiwari, is a heart patient and has been under medical care. Lt. Tiwari’s elder sister resides in Dubai .
The Indian Army honored Lt. Tiwari’s bravery, stating that “despite his tender age and brief service,” he “leaves behind a legacy of courage and camaraderie that will inspire generations of soldiers to come”.

His mortal remains were flown to Ayodhya, where he was accorded full military honors. The final rites were conducted at Jamthara Ghat, with dignitaries and citizens paying their respects. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a financial assistance of ₹50 lakh for the bereaved family and the construction of a memorial in Lt. Tiwari’s honor in Ayodhya .
Lt. Tiwari’s sacrifice exemplifies the highest traditions of the Indian Army, embodying selfless service and unwavering commitment to duty. His actions serve as a poignant reminder of the courage and dedication exhibited by the nation’s armed forces.
