Manipur: 51 Kuki Students Shifted from JNV Ukhrul
Manipur Police evacuated 51 Kuki students from JNV Ramva in Ukhrul and shifted them to Kangpokpi following rising tension between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities.

IMPHAL- In view of escalating tension between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, Manipur Police evacuated 51 Kuki students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Ramva in Ukhrul district and shifted them to Kangpokpi under security escort as a precautionary measure.
According to an official police statement, the students — including 31 boys and 20 girls — were handed over to a team from Saikul police station for safe onward transportation to JNV Kangpokpi. Authorities said the relocation was carried out to ensure the safety and well-being of students amid continuing unrest in parts of the district.

Security sources indicated that the decision followed recent violence in the Litan Sareikhong area, where nearly 30 houses were reportedly burnt after clashes linked to an assault incident earlier this month. Officials described the evacuation as a preventive step to avoid any potential risk to students staying in the affected region.
During the transfer, some local residents allegedly mistook the students for miscreants, briefly raising tension. However, local civil society organisations intervened and helped defuse the situation, allowing the evacuation process to continue without further disruption. Police acknowledged the cooperation of community leaders and organisations from Shangshak, Ramva, Shokvao, TM Kasom and S Laho areas for facilitating the safe movement.

Authorities stated that the unrest was triggered by a drunken altercation between two groups on February 7 in Litan town, a commercial hub inhabited by both Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities. The incident later escalated into wider clashes, highlighting underlying tensions in the area.
While officials said the situation remains sensitive, they confirmed that it is currently under control. The state administration has appealed to all communities to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours that could aggravate the situation further.
