Manipur: Assam Rifles Destroy 18 Acres of Poppy Fields
Joint operation by Assam Rifles, CRPF and Manipur Police clears 18 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Kangpokpi, preventing opium worth crores.

KANGPOKPI- In a major anti-narcotics push, Assam Rifles, in joint coordination with the CRPF and Manipur Police, destroyed 18 acres of illicit poppy cultivation in the Sehjang area of Kangpokpi district. According to officials, the land under cultivation had the potential to yield approximately 250 kg of opium, valued at several crores in the illegal drug market.
The operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to curb narcotics production in Manipur’s hill regions, where poppy cultivation has seen periodic spikes linked to organised trafficking networks. Authorities note that such plantations often fuel illegal trade routes, contributing to addiction, insurgent financing, and cross-border smuggling.

Security personnel located and cleared the fields, uprooting and burning mature crops to prevent harvesting. While no arrests have been reported so far, officials stated that further investigation is underway to identify cultivators, financiers, and local handlers.
The action aligns with intensified state and central efforts to dismantle narcotics infrastructure in the Northeast, with multiple coordinated operations conducted over recent months.
