Manipur: Six people killed in fresh violence

The Manipur government ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the state on Saturday, and asked the security forces to remain on high alert.

IMPHAL: Six people were killed in fresh violence this morning in Manipur’s Jiribam district, the police said. Suspected Kuki insurgents attacked Nungchappi village in the district killing a 63-year-old man identified as Yurembam Kulendra Singha, while he was sleeping at his residence.

As per Manipur Police on the fresh flare up in Jiribam, the attackers continued their assault, targeting nearby Rasidpur village, where local village volunteers confronted the militants. One village volunteer and four suspected Kuki militants were killed during the confrontation.

During the clash, another civilian, 41-year-old Baspatimayum Lakhi Kumar Sharma of Dibong Khunou, Jiribam, was also killed.

In a separate incident, armed Kuki groups launched coordinated attacks on villages in the Sugnu and Tangjeng areas, injuring two volunteers. The violence, involving bombs and bullets, originated from Churachandpur District and targeted villages in Kumbi constituency.

Further clashes were reported in Pombikhok and Chandonpokpi, though no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Manipur Police said Kuki militants fired long range rockets at Moirang Khoiru Leikal in Friday’s attack that killed a 70-year-old RK. Rabei of Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai and injuring five others.

In Imphal, the Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) K Kabib today told reporters, “… Yesterday, some Kuki militants attacked and fired at some fringe areas including Bishnupur and Churachandpur border. In response to that, combined teams of the security forces conducted combing operations. They have destroyed two bunkers which was previously occupied by militants. After that, there was a long-range rocket fire from the hills by Kuki militants at Moirang, in which one senior citizen was killed and six others were injured.”

Following the violence, a huge contingent of Assam Rifles, other Central Armed Police Force personnel and Manipur police commandos have rushed to all the places where fresh incidents of violence took place since Saturday morning.
