Manipur Tense After Deadly Ambush in Hills

UKHRUL/ KAMJONG-  A fresh wave of violence has unfolded in Manipur’s hill districts following a late-night ambush in Kamjong district that left four suspected cadres of a Naga insurgent group dead, further deepening tensions in the region.

The incident took place on Saturday night in Hongbei village under Kasom Khullen block, where a vehicle carrying six individuals was reportedly intercepted by armed assailants around 9:20 pm. According to a statement attributed to the proscribed NSCN (Eastern Flank), its cadres were targeted in the attack.

Four individuals were killed on the spot, while two others reportedly escaped into nearby forested areas. The identities of the attackers remain unclear, and authorities are examining whether the incident was the result of factional rivalry or a case of mistaken identity.

In a separate statement, NSCN-IM expressed shock over the incident, stating that no directive had been issued from its General Headquarters to initiate any offensive action. The group indicated that an internal inquiry had been launched and that those found responsible would face action under its internal regulations.

The killings triggered immediate unrest in neighbouring Ukhrul district on Sunday morning. A mob reportedly stormed and set fire to a regional office associated with the group, escalating tensions in the area.

Security forces have since been deployed in significant numbers, with officials describing the situation in Ukhrul as “volatile but under watch.” Efforts are underway to prevent further escalation and possible communal spillover.

The latest incident follows a series of recent security challenges in the state. Earlier this week, suspected Kuki militants opened fire on an Indian Army post in Imphal West, resulting in a brief gun battle. In response, joint operations involving the Indian Army, CRPF, and Manipur Police are ongoing in several districts to contain armed activity.

Authorities have also extended the suspension of mobile internet services in sensitive areas, citing concerns over the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content.

The renewed violence highlights the fragile security situation in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and insurgent activity have persisted despite administrative efforts to restore normalcy.

The state government, led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, has recently announced financial assistance for internally displaced persons, though tens of thousands continue to remain in relief camps.

Observers note that the recurrence of such incidents underscores the complexity of the conflict dynamics in the region, where overlapping ethnic, political and insurgent interests continue to pose challenges to lasting peace.
