Meghalaya: USTM Hosts Vibrant Northeast Graduate Congress
Students from all eight Northeastern states showcased cultural unity as NEGC 2026’s second day began with a grand inaugural ceremony at USTM.

SHILLONG- The campus of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) witnessed a display of cultural diversity and youth participation on Friday as the second day of the Northeast Graduate Congress (NEGC) 2026 commenced with a formal inaugural ceremony and a cultural rally.
Students representing all eight Northeastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim — participated in a procession across the campus in traditional attire. The rally brought together a range of folk traditions, turning the venue into a representation of the region’s cultural plurality and drawing attention from attendees and dignitaries.
The procession preceded the formal inauguration, setting a tone centred on regional unity and cultural exchange. The event is part of the eighth edition of NEGC, a programme positioned as a platform for academic interaction and leadership development among youth in the Northeast.

Addressing the gathering, Meghalaya’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira described USTM as an emerging centre for academic and cultural engagement in the region. He emphasised the role of youth in shaping the future of the Northeast and encouraged participants to use such platforms for knowledge-sharing and leadership development.
The event was attended by several public representatives, including Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui, Rural Development Minister Sosthenes Sohun, and Nongpoh–Ri Bhoi MLA Mayralborn Syem. The programme began with a welcome address followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.

In his address, Rymbui stressed the need to bridge academic learning with practical engagement. He highlighted that education should extend beyond theoretical frameworks and contribute to addressing societal challenges.
Sohun focused on the importance of inclusive development, particularly in rural areas, and called upon students to engage with grassroots issues. Syem noted that platforms such as NEGC help foster connections among youth from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Congress has brought together students, scholars and delegates from institutions across the Northeast. Beyond academic engagement, the event offers participants exposure to the region’s cultural diversity.
Organisers stated that NEGC aims to create a collaborative environment where young individuals can exchange ideas, build networks and contribute to discussions on regional development, innovation and social issues.
The event will continue over the coming days with academic competitions, paper presentations, debates and interactive sessions. As proceedings continue, the gathering reflects both the diversity and aspirations of the Northeast’s younger generation.
