Mizoram CM Zoramthanga writes Amit Shah to appoint a MIZO speaking CS

Last month, the Centre appointed Renu Sharma, an IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, as the chief secretary of Mizoram.

AIZAWL-   Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has written to Home Minister Amit Shah requesting him to reconsider the central government’s appointment of the new state chief secretary Renu Sharma.

In his letter to Amit Shah, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga urged him to appoint someone with a working knowledge of Mizo language for the top job. He said most of the people in Mizoram and many of his colleagues in the cabinet “do not understand Hindi” and even “have problem with English”.

The Chief Minister has requested that Additional Chief Secretary JC Ramthanga be named the new chief secretary in place of Renu Sharma.

However, Last month, the Centre appointed Renu Sharma, an IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, as the chief secretary of Mizoram.

The same day, the Mizoram government also ordered JC Ramthanga to take charge as chief secretary from November 1, thus Mizoram now has two Chief secretaries.

The CM said that a Mizo-speaking official is required for the top job because Mizo people and his cabinet ministers generally do not understand Hindi and many of his ministers aren’t well versed even in English.

“With such background, a CS without knowledge of working Mizo language will not be effective or efficient and due to this centre has never appointed a CS who doesn’t understand Mizo language since the creation of the state,” CM Zoramthanga said.
