Mizoram: NFR Conducts First-Ever Trial Run to Sairang, Aizawl
Mizoram Becomes Fourth Northeast State with Capital Railway Connectivity.

AIZAWL– In a historic development for the region, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully conducted the first-ever trial run of a train to Sairang, near Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. This milestone marks Mizoram as the fourth northeastern state to be directly connected to the national railway network, promising enhanced connectivity and economic growth for the state.
The trial run was overseen by Arun Kumar Chaudhary, General Manager (Construction), NFR, along with senior railway officials. Their presence underscored the importance of the project and the tireless efforts made to overcome the region’s difficult terrain and construction challenges.

Following the trial, Chaudhary briefed Mizoram Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh and Chief Minister Lalduhoma on the progress and strategic significance of the Bhairabi–Sairang New Line Railway Project, which spans 51.38 km.
He confirmed that construction work is on track and that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will inspect the project in early June, with the official inauguration expected after June 17. He also emphasized the project’s potential to reduce transportation costs, improve access to essential goods, and boost local tourism and small-scale industries.

Engineering Feat in the Hills
Described as an engineering marvel, the Bhairabi–Sairang line includes:
- 48 tunnels, totaling 12.85 km
- 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges
- A 104-meter-high bridge (Bridge No. 196), towering 42 meters above the Qutub Minar
- 5 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 6 Road Under Bridges (RUBs)
The project is divided into four sections:
- Bhairabi – Hortoki
- Hortoki – Kawnpui
- Kawnpui – Mualkhang
- Mualkhang – Sairang

With this advancement, NFR reaffirms its commitment to the timely completion of the project, which will integrate Mizoram more closely with the rest of the country. The railway is expected to:

- Promote intra and inter-state travel
- Strengthen supply chains for goods and services
