Nagaland: Sentiyanger Imchen Appointed as New Chief Secretary of the state
Imchen will assume office on August 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. J. Alam, who retires on July 31 upon superannuation.

KOHIMA— The Government of Nagaland has appointed Sentiyanger Imchen, a 1991 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Nagaland cadre, as the new Chief Secretary of the state. Imchen will assume office on August 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. J. Alam, who retires on July 31 upon superannuation.
According to an official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (P&AR), Imchen, currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner, will take on the role of the state’s top bureaucrat.
His appointment marks a significant transition in Nagaland’s administrative leadership, with Imchen expected to serve in this position until January 2027, as per the State Civil List published by P&AR.

Imchen brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held key positions in the state’s administration, including his current responsibilities overseeing financial operations. His appointment has been met with widespread approval, with many citing his efficiency and impeccable record.
A post on X by a user congratulated Imchen, describing him as “an efficient, trusted officer with an impeccable record” and expressing optimism for Nagaland’s progress under his leadership.
The outgoing Chief Secretary, Dr. J. Alam, who assumed the role on February 12, 2021, was formally handed over the charge to Imchen on July 31, 2025, in a ceremony marking the transition.

Alam’s tenure was noted for its contributions to the state, including successful management of events like the Hornbill Festival and navigating administrative challenges.
Imchen’s appointment comes at a time when Nagaland faces critical administrative and developmental priorities. His leadership is anticipated to drive people-oriented initiatives, building on his prior contributions, such as advocating for innovative budget proposals and implementing austerity measures during the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthen the state’s financial resilience.
The Nagaland government and public have expressed confidence in Imchen’s ability to steer the state toward greater heights, with expectations high for his tenure as Chief Secretary.
