Assam: Post Malone pays emotional tribute to Zubeen Garg
At his debut Northeast concert in Guwahati, global pop star Post Malone paused mid-performance to honour late Assamese icon Zubeen Garg — a moment that left thousands cheering and emotional.

GUWAHATI- In an unprecedented cultural moment that bridged continents and emotions, American pop sensation Post Malone honoured late Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg during his electrifying concert in Guwahati on Monday. The tribute unfolded in front of a packed audience at the Khanapara Veterinary College Ground, marking the Grammy-nominated singer’s first-ever solo headline show in Northeast India.
The event, produced by BookMyShow Live with support from the Assam government, drew thousands from across the region. While Malone’s setlist of global hits — including “Rockstar,” “Sunflower,” and “Congratulations” — kept energy high, it was his brief unscripted pause that defined the night.
Gripping the microphone, the 30-year-old artist declared, “To be in the home of the great legendary Zubeen tonight… I hope everyone’s having an amazing night. My name is Austin Richard Post, and I’ve come to play some street songs.”

The crowd erupted, waving flags and chanting “Zubeen Da” as thousands broke into cheers and some into tears. Clips of the moment soon flooded social media, amassing millions of views. Fans hailed the gesture as “historic” and “heartfelt,” with users noting that Malone’s tribute opened “fresh possibilities for Assam on the global music map.”
Zubeen Garg — revered as the “Voice of Assam” — passed away on 19 September 2025 at age 52 during the North East India Film Festival in Singapore. Singapore authorities cited drowning, but the Assam government continues to dispute the conclusion. An SIT probe remains underway, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently stating in the Assembly that the case was “plain and simple murder,” adding that a chargesheet is expected on December 12.

The unresolved investigation has kept Garg’s legacy firmly in public memory. Fellow artists have lined up tributes, including Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who is scheduled to perform a tribute concert in Guwahati soon.
Malone’s acknowledgment further highlighted Garg’s cross-cultural impact despite his primarily regional base. Over three decades, Garg created a lasting musical archive — from patriotic classics like “O Mur Apunar Desh” to film compositions in Assamese, Hindi, and other regional languages.
Concertgoers described the moment as transformative. “It felt like Zubeen Da was there with us,” said Priya Das, 25, from Jorhat. “Post Malone didn’t have to do that — but he did. It shows how much Assam has to share with the world.”

As Assam awaits the SIT findings on Garg’s death, the tribute stands as a reminder of music’s power to unify. Malone ended the show thanking fans for their love and promised a return “to Zubeen’s homeland sooner than you think.”
For one night in Guwahati, global stardom and local sentiment aligned — ensuring that Zubeen Garg’s voice continues to echo across generations.
