Tension on Assam-Mizoram Border over Tree Cutting

GUWAHATI. Tension prevailed in along the Assam-Mizoram border Assam’s Hailakadi district over felling of trees allegedly by residents of Mizoram, officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday evening in Ramnathpur village of the district.
The Divisional Forest Officer of Hailakandi district said some Mizoram people were cutting trees on land falling within the Assam border. The local people protested and informed the police.

On hearing about the incident, the local police along with the district administration and forest officials went there and tried to convince the people of Mizoram that the land falls under the territory of Assam, the official said. He agreed and left from there.
Meanwhile, the administration has increased police vigil in that village to avoid any untoward incident. The 165 km long border between Assam and Mizoram has been a point of contention for the two states at several places.

Last year, six Assam policemen had lost their lives in a clash between the two states. After this, talks were held between the two states to resolve the border issue.
The Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram held talks on resolving the border dispute in Delhi in September this year.
