Zubeen Death Case: Assam CM Issues Stern Warning Against AI-Generated Images

He stressed that misinformation not only dishonors Garg but also undermines the CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) working on the high-profile probe.

GUWAHATI-  The ongoing investigation into the tragic death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken another turn—this time in the digital space. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly condemned the circulation of AI-generated and manipulated images linked to the case, calling those responsible “criminals” who disrespect Garg’s memory.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Sarma highlighted the surge of deepfake visuals showing arrested suspects—festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta —smiling or appearing casual, despite facing murder charges in connection with the singer’s death.

“These guys are definitely not true fans of Zubeen Garg, they are somewhat criminals,” Sarma wrote, urging the public not to share such fake content. He stressed that misinformation not only dishonors Garg but also undermines the CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) working on the high-profile probe.

Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19 while swimming off Singapore’s Sentosa Island during the North East India Festival. While Singapore’s initial autopsy cited drowning, suspicions of foul play led to arrests and murder charges against four individuals, all currently in CID custody.

The CID echoed Sarma’s warning, with ASP Moramee Das confirming that digital platforms are being closely monitored. Authorities warned violators could face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for spreading false information, with punishments including fines and jail time.

Meanwhile, Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, who recently received the second autopsy report and recorded her statement with the SIT, appealed for restraint. “Let the truth emerge through proper channels, not through fabricated lies,” she said.

As a judicial commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia oversees the probe, Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to a transparent investigation, including possible international cooperation with Singapore under the MLAT framework.

The controversy highlights a rising challenge: the misuse of AI in sensitive cases. As Assam mourns its beloved cultural icon, the government and CID are determined to ensure that truth prevails over distortion.
